Jason van Bruggen is a freelance photographer based in Toronto, Canada. He completed a Master’s degree in History and Political Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada in 1996. He spent time working on international political development in Africa, on commercial film projects in various parts of the world, on reconstruction projects in austere and often hostile environments, and as a wilderness guide in northern Canada. 

Jason’s academic training and experience traveling and working in over 80 countries instilled in him a strong sense of urgency regarding the rapidly vanishing remote, pristine landscapes and indigenous cultures of the world. Jason’s passion for exploration led him to become a self-taught photographer. From the rugged mountains of the Tibetan Himalaya to the  Central African Sahel to the rain soaked valleys of Patagonia, Jason has been in search of those rare, definitive moments where setting, activity and light converge to form a magical image. As a healthy and multi-lingual citizen of the world, Jason has demonstrated the physical ability and cultural sensitivities to document both remote, geographical destinations and vanishing tribal cultures in often troubled parts of the world. His mission is to share the essence of these experiences with a wider audience as evocative image.

You will see a select group of images from his journeys on this website. These images and many more are available for sale as prints. These photos were taken on a mix of medium format, panoramic(24*65mm), 35mm and digital formats. The rich colour palette of these images was achieved in camera. Digital processing of images has been kept to the bare minimum, usually correcting only visible dust and scratch marks acquired during the scanning process.
